Follow the doctor’s orders

When you don’t feel well, everyday tasks become harder to complete. For Manase, a diagnosis of hypertension added to the already difficult task of providing for his family daily. His doctors advised him to drink plenty of water to manage his blood pressure, but the water available to him was contaminated. The family relied on water from Lake Burera – a tainted and polluted source – which led to persistent diarrhea in his children and exacerbated his own health issues.

Living in poverty, Manase’s family couldn’t afford the firewood needed to boil water, leaving them even more vulnerable to waterborne illnesses. But all of that began to change when they were selected to receive a 20 Liters SAM III household water filter through World Relief. This simple yet life-changing intervention provided the family with access to clean, safe drinking water – transforming their health and well-being.

Enough for me and for you

Manase shares, “Now, with the filter, I can drink safe water for myself and even share it with three neighboring families. My health has improved significantly, and my children no longer suffer from waterborne illnesses.

As the family’s health improved, Manase’s life began to change in other ways. He joined a World Relief Savings for Life group, where he learned how to save, invest and build a better future. Due to the savings accumulated from receiving the 20 Liters filter and no longer needing to buy firewood, Manase was able to set aside money each month. Eventually, he saved 257,500 RWF ($194 USD). This money enabled Manase to make essential home improvements and secure a more stable future.

Building a stronger, long-lasting community

Being a part of the savings group has also restored Manase’s hope and given him a sense of community. Manase speaks of the powerful bond within the savings group, as they share their burdens and celebrate their individual achievements together: “We pray together during our meetings, and it has strengthened my faith.”

With clean water now a reliable part of their lives, Manase and his family have seen an increase in not only their economic stability but also their sense of belonging and spiritual connection. Manase adds, “My family and neighbors are so grateful to World Relief. Their efforts to help the most vulnerable without corruption are truly a blessing.”

Through this partnership with 20 Liters, Manase’s family is thriving economically, socially and spiritually. Clean water has become the foundation for better health, stronger faith and newfound economic opportunities – proving the profound and lasting impact of sustainable, community-focused solutions.
