Dorosela
The kitchen out building of Dorosela Mukantabama’s home has been destroyed by wind and fire. The tin roof of her single room home is filled with holes and sunlight makes a sprinkling of light on the dirt floor. The sunlight is beautiful; however we can only imagine how miserable it is to sleep on the floor of that room during the heavy rains of the rainy season.
Dorosela‘s home has a water filter that she takes careful care of. She was chosen to have a filter because of her great need and her generous spirit. She has one arm. One is left to wonder if her right arm was cut off during the genocide. She cannot lift a jerry can of water and so she relies on the help of neighbors. Each full jerry can weighs roughly 40 pounds. The neighbors fetch water for themselves and for Dorosela’s family from a nearby swamp. The neighbors will filter their own water and before leaving they will lift a jerry can of water up and pour it through the filter for Dorosela.
